Manchester United are continuing their aggressive summer rebuild after reaching an agreement to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson. However, the club already appear focused on securing another major midfield addition.
The Red Devils finalised a £38M deal for the Brazilian last week. Ederson will now travel to the World Cup after receiving a late call-up to Brazil’s squad.
The midfielder will complete his medical and sign a five-year contract once he returns in July. Despite that breakthrough, United have no plans to slow down in the transfer market.
Michael Carrick wants more midfield reinforcements before the new season begins, especially after Casemiro’s departure and growing uncertainty surrounding Manuel Ugarte’s future.
Several midfielders have appeared on United’s shortlist in recent months. However, one name continues to move closer towards the top of the club’s priorities.
West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes has emerged as a serious target for Manchester United.
The Portuguese midfielder impressed despite West Ham suffering relegation to the Championship. Therefore, many clubs across Europe now expect him to leave the London club this summer.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have already started direct conversations with Fernandes’ representatives. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said:
“Manchester United are in direct conversations with the agents of Mateus Fernandes.
“Manchester United made contact over the last 48 hours with the agents of the player, and Manchester United started the conversation about the eventual cost of the deal, transfer fee, but also salary.
“The price decided by West Ham for Mateus Fernandes, according to my information, is £85m.
“Manchester United are very interested in the player. So, after Ederson, which is already done, the next one could be him.”
United have already opened club-to-club talks with West Ham. However, the Old Trafford hierarchy do not want to pay the full asking price at this stage.
