Julian Alvarez faces an uncertain future at Atletico Madrid as tensions continue over a possible summer exit.
The Argentine forward wants a new challenge after two seasons in Spain, but Atletico remain determined to keep him.
The 26-year-old has attracted major interest across Europe. Arsenal admire the former Manchester City striker and continue to monitor developments after missing out on Vinicius Junior.
However, Alvarez has now made his own transfer preference clear. His position could seriously damage Arsenal’s hopes of bringing him back to the Premier League.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Alvarez intends to reiterate his desire to join Barcelona when discussions over his future enter their decisive stage.
He has already communicated that preference both privately and publicly. Alvarez previously said during the World Cup:
“I spoke with people at the club, with those I had to speak with and the best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream.”
He added that he did not want to hide his intentions despite the timing of those comments. Barcelona have already shown interest and could submit another offer if Atletico agree to negotiate.
Real Madrid have also made an approach, while Arsenal remain attentive to the situation. Nevertheless, Atletico have refused to change their stance.
Diego Simeone stressed that the club want Alvarez to stay and continue developing under him. Atletico CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has taken an equally firm position.
That leaves Alvarez and Atletico at a clear impasse. The forward wants Barcelona, while his club currently refuse to sanction any transfer.
Therefore, Arsenal need Atletico to soften their position and Alvarez to reconsider his preferred destination before a move becomes realistic.
