Manchester United remain interested in strengthening their options at left-back as Michael Carrick prepares his squad for Champions League football.
Luke Shaw remains the only recognised senior left-back in the squad. Although his fitness improved significantly last season, United want greater depth for a demanding campaign across several competitions.
Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall has emerged as a leading option. But the Magpies have made clear they do not want to sell him this summer.
United have already approached Newcastle to explore the conditions of a possible transfer.
However, the Tyneside club rejected those advances and insisted the defender remains part of their plans.
Newcastle‘s stance comes after a difficult window which has already seen Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes leave the club.
According to The Sun, Lewis Hall remains eager to join Manchester United. And he has made his desire to leave Newcastle clear despite Matthias Jaissle replacing Eddie Howe as manager.
The report claims Hall’s frustration stretches back to Howe’s tactical decisions last season. He believes those choices contributed to him missing out on England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup.
That disappointment is said to have strengthened his desire for a move away from St James’ Park, with Old Trafford emerging as his preferred destination.
However, Newcastle retain considerable control over the situation. Hall is under contract until 2029, leaving the club in a strong position during any negotiations.
There are also concerns among some Newcastle players about the direction of the club following the loss of several important first-team stars this summer.
Newcastle have not completely ruled out changing their position, although much could depend on how strongly Hall pushes for an exit.
Manchester United therefore remain attentive to developments as Carrick looks to add another full-back before the transfer window closes.
