Liverpool endured a disappointing 2025-26 campaign as they finished fifth in the Premier League with just 60 points.
The Reds did secure Champions League qualification but finished 25 points behind Premier League champions Arsenal.
As a result, Arne Slot left the club, with former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola replacing him at Anfield.
Liverpool have since started rebuilding their squad after Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, and Ibrahima Konate left on free transfers.
The Reds signed Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes for around £55-60 million and Victor Munoz from Osasuna for approximately £35 million.
However, Iraola also wants to improve his midfield options after assessing his current squad ahead of the new season.
Manchester United are also strengthening their midfield after Casemiro departed and Manuel Ugarte suffered a serious knee injury.
The Red Devils have already signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £50 million and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35 million.
However, Michael Carrick still wants to add another more defensive option to his midfield during the summer transfer window.
According to Football Insider, Liverpool are prepared to challenge Manchester United to sign Roma midfielder Manu Kone this summer.
Both clubs had scouts monitoring the 25-year-old during the World Cup, where he featured for fourth-placed France.
Manchester United have been keeping a close eye on Kone’s situation. However, their interest has not progressed beyond that stage.
Meanwhile, Kone now features highly on Liverpool’s midfield shortlist as Iraola looks to further strengthen his squad.
Roma are reluctant to lose Kone, who still has three years remaining on his contract. However, their financial situation means they could find it difficult to reject a big offer if Liverpool or United.
