Liverpool tipped to hijack Arsenal’s move for England World Cup star

Liverpool have now been encouraged to target an experienced Premier League defender.

Liverpool have already started making major changes to their squad following a disappointing 2025–26 campaign.

The Reds appointed Andoni Iraola as their new manager after Arne Slot left following a difficult season at Anfield.

Moreover, several experienced players have departed, including Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate.

Liverpool have responded by strengthening their squad with Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz this summer.

However, Konate’s departure has created another potential issue in central defence despite Jacquet’s arrival from Rennes.

Liverpool currently have Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni as their main centre-back options.

However, Van Dijk is entering the latter stages of his career, while Gomez has struggled with injuries.

Meanwhile, Jacquet and Leoni remain relatively inexperienced and have both recently dealt with long-term injury problems.

Therefore, Liverpool have now been encouraged to target an experienced Premier League defender who is also attracting interest from Arsenal.

According to the Liverpool Echo, former Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer has urged the Reds to make an £80M move for Aston Villa star Ezri Konsa. McAteer said:

The 28-year-old enjoyed an impressive World Cup campaign with England and showed his ability to operate across different defensive positions.

“I see a more ready-made centre half coming in who’s got international experience, who knows the Premier League.

“I don’t think he’s done himself any harm with his performances at the World Cup. I think he showed his versatility and maturity.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal have identified the England international as a defensive option after William Saliba suffered an injury.

However, Liverpool could potentially disrupt their Premier League rivals if they decide to act on McAteer’s recommendation.

Aston Villa have already lost Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans this summer, meaning Unai Emery will want to retain another important player.

Nevertheless, McAteer believes a huge offer could change Villa’s position. He said:

“If Liverpool are going to go and throw £80M at Konsa and bring him in then Villa, I’m sure for FFP, will take the opportunity for that kind of money.”

For now, Liverpool have not made an official offer for Konsa. However, McAteer believes the England international could provide the proven defensive quality the Reds need.
