Manchester United remain in the market for a new left-back this summer. The Red Devils want greater competition for Luke Shaw following the departure of Tyrell Malacia.
Strengthening the left side of defence has become one of the club’s priorities as Michael Carrick prepares for a return to Champions League football.
Several names have already been linked with a move to Old Trafford. Earlier this month, reports claimed United had entered the race to sign Marc Cucurella from Chelsea.
However, that pursuit has now come to an end. Real Madrid have officially completed a deal worth €60M to sign the Spain international from Chelsea.
The transfer represents another major addition for Jose Mourinho as he reshapes his squad ahead of the new season.
Yet Cucurella’s arrival in Madrid may create an opportunity for Manchester United elsewhere.
According to reports from The Touchline, United are now internally exploring a move for Alvaro Carreras.
The defender only joined Real Madrid from Benfica last summer in a deal worth around €50M.
Despite arriving with high expectations, the Spaniard endured a mixed first season at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Now, Cucurella could become Mourinho’s first-choice left-back, which could limit Carreras’ opportunities for regular football.
As a result, the 23-year-old may consider a move away from Madrid in search of more playing time.
That situation has reportedly caught Manchester United’s attention. Carreras is no stranger to Old Trafford.
The left-back previously came through the club’s academy before leaving to continue his development elsewhere.
Reports suggest United are now assessing whether a return could be possible. However, there are reasons to believe a deal may not be straightforward.
United previously chose not to activate a buy-back clause when Carreras left Benfica for Real Madrid.
That decision raises questions about how highly he is currently rated by the club’s recruitment team. Meanwhile, Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall remains another key target.
