Manchester United are still looking to strengthen their squad after securing a return to Champions League football last season.
Michael Carrick helped stabilise the club after replacing Ruben Amorim and guided United back into the Premier League’s top four.
The Red Devils have already added Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to their midfield this summer. They also brought in Karl Darlow to strengthen their goalkeeping options.
However, Carrick has made it clear that United still need more additions before the transfer window closes.
Defensive cover remains one of the areas United want to address as they prepare for another demanding campaign.
Arsenal are also searching for another defender after winning the Premier League title during the 2025-26 season.
The Gunners have already added Piero Hincapie, but Jurrien Timber remains sidelined and could miss several more weeks.
Arsenal have also struggled to make progress in talks for Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa because of his £60 million valuation.
According to Steve Kay from FootballTransfers, Manchester United are now ready to battle Arsenal for Bayer Leverkusen defender Jarell Quansah.
Arsenal have opened talks with Leverkusen, while Manchester United have contacted Quansah’s representatives over a possible move.
The 23-year-old can play at centre-back and right-back, making him an attractive option for both Premier League clubs.
Arsenal currently hold an advantage because of their strong relationship with Bayer Leverkusen.
However, the Bundesliga club do not want to lose Quansah and plan to demand significantly more than the €35 million they paid for him.
FootballTransfers also reports a sizeable gap between Arsenal’s valuation and Leverkusen’s demands.
That difference could give Manchester United an opportunity to move ahead in the race.
Liverpool previously had the chance to bring Quansah back this summer for €80 million, but that option has now expired. The Reds still have a €60 million option for next summer.
For now, Manchester United and Arsenal are both exploring a deal as they look to strengthen their defensive options before the window closes.
