Manchester United are preparing for another busy summer as they strengthen their squad for the new season.
The Red Devils secured a return to the Champions League and now face a much tougher schedule.
Michael Carrick wants more depth and quality across several positions. United invested heavily last summer and saw positive results.
Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Senne Lammens and Benjamin Sesko all arrived at Old Trafford. The club now wants to build on that progress.
Meanwhile, Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho have all departed. That has created room for further additions.
One player attracting serious interest is RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba. According to Fussball Daten, Manchester United currently lead the race for the French centre-back.
The report claims United have already opened concrete talks with the player’s representatives. Lukeba remains under contract with Leipzig until 2029.
However, the defender reportedly feels ready for a new challenge after spending three years in Germany. The 23-year-old has developed into one of the Bundesliga’s most highly-rated defenders.
United already possess several centre-back options. Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven all compete for places.
That raises questions about how Lukeba would fit into Carrick’s plans. Despite that, United appear determined to strengthen their defence further.
The club also face strong competition. Barcelona have expressed interest in the defender following another successful La Liga campaign.
The Spanish champions have reportedly contacted his representatives to discuss a possible deal. However, they may struggle to match Leipzig’s valuation.
Several Premier League clubs are also monitoring the situation. Chelsea and Manchester City have tracked Lukeba for a long time.
Tottenham Hotspur also admire the defender. But for now, Manchester United remain at the front of the queue.
