Nottingham Forest endured a turbulent 2025-26 Premier League campaign after going through four different head coaches during the season.
Nuno Espirito Santo, Ange Postecoglou and Sean Dyche all departed before Vitor Pereira eventually guided Forest to safety. They finished 16th but also reached the Europa League semi-finals.
However, Forest have since appointed Oliver Glasner, while their midfield has undergone significant changes during the summer transfer window.
Elliot Anderson completed a £116 million move to Manchester City in July, leaving Forest searching for a direct replacement.
They have already signed Austrian international Xaver Schlager on a free transfer from RB Leipzig.
Forest have not given up on adding another midfielder, with Manchester City’s Tijjani Reijnders sitting at the top of their list.
However, the Dutch international looks set to join Saudi Pro League club Al Qadsiah.
According to The Athletic, Nottingham Forest are also keen on signing Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall as an alternative option.
However, Tottenham’s valuation could become a major stumbling block for Forest. The London club have already rejected one bid for the Swedish international.
Meanwhile, Glasner may have discovered another solution within his current squad following Forest’s 2-1 preseason victory over Bayer Leverkusen.
James McAtee impressed after the break while operating in a deeper midfield role. Glasner has been working with the 23-year-old in that position since taking charge.
McAtee started only two Premier League matches last season and made another 12 appearances from the bench. However, his preseason performances have given Glasner another midfield option.
Forest still hope to sign another midfielder before the transfer window closes, with Reijnders and Bergvall among their targets.
