Some departures feel like they’ve been building for a while.
A player whose form has dipped, with a club that needs funds to bring in the next generation of talent.
A very specific conversation that changes the nature of the speculation entirely.
PSG open talks to sign Arsenal winger as Gunners prepare for summer overhaul
According to L’Equipe, PSG sporting director Luis Campos has held direct talks with the representatives of Gabriel Martinelli ahead of a potential summer transfer.
Martinelli joined Arsenal from Brazilian side Ituano for just £6 million back in 2019.
Over 271 appearances and 62 goals later, he’s become a recognised name at the top level, but this season has been one of the more difficult of his career, with just one Premier League goal to his name.
His contract runs until 2027, which gives Arsenal enough leverage to demand a proper fee rather than feel forced into a discount.
Reports suggest the Gunners would be willing to listen to offers in the region of £50 million.
And crucially, Arsenal are said to be open to the sale.
The club are planning a significant attacking overhaul this summer and need funds to bring in the reinforcements Mikel Arteta wants.
Martinelli’s departure, if it happens, would go directly towards funding that rebuild.
For PSG, the logic is slightly different.
Luis Enrique’s side have just reached another Champions League semi-final and are actively looking to add attacking quality this summer.
Nothing is concrete yet.
But the fact that Campos is personally involved in those early conversations speaks to how seriously PSG are taking this.
For Arsenal supporters, this one will take some processing.
A player who arrived as a teenager, grew into a fan favourite, and gave everything for the club, now the subject of conversations with one of the biggest clubs in Europe.
The summer is still some way off.
But this story has the feel of one that’s going to run.
