Joao Mendes is carving out his own path in football. The 20-year-old winger, son of the legendary Ronaldinho, has already spent time at Barcelona and Burnley but is now preparing for a fresh start.
Mendes first developed in Brazil with Cruzeiro before making the move to Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy.
From there, he switched to Burnley on a two-year deal, where he spent just over a year before moving on in the summer.
The left-footed forward showed promise in the Premier League Cup last season. He played five matches, scored once against Reading, and provided two assists in games against Luton Town.
His style is much like his father’s, but he insists on building his own identity.
In an interview with ESPN Brazil, Mendes said that being Ronaldinho’s son is something he is proud of, but he does not want to live in his father’s shadow. He said:
“I want to be Joao, regardless of anything. I never tried to be my father, I never wanted to be my father.”
He also added that moving away from Barcelona was the right step for him, giving him space to grow on his own terms.
The youngster also spoke about adjusting to life in England. The weather, in particular, has been one of the biggest challenges. He said:
“It’s difficult at first, there’s no denying that. Even more so now in winter and here, as it’s in the north, it’s a bit worse. If you put on a glove, two socks, we can manage.”
He also praised the passion of English fans, noting how strong the connection is between supporters and their clubs. Joao said:
“Even though it’s a small town, people are very passionate and connected to football. You can see it at matches here, because [the fans] always fill the stadium.”
Now, Mendes is ready for his next chapter. After leaving Burnley, he is set to join a Championship side’s academy team.
That club is Hull City, where he will link up with their Under-21s at Bishop Burton College.
For Mendes, this is another step in building a career that stands on its own. For Hull City, it is a chance to nurture a player with talent, ambition, and a famous footballing legacy.
