Tottenham Hotspur are preparing for another important summer after narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League.
Roberto De Zerbi guided Spurs to safety following his arrival in March and has already started reshaping the squad.
The North London club finished 17th for the second consecutive season, prompting the Lewis Family to promise significant investment ahead of the new campaign. That rebuild is already underway.
Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi have arrived from Liverpool and Bournemouth, respectively, while Tottenham have also agreed a £52 million deal for Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke.
However, De Zerbi now wants to strengthen further up the pitch. According to GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham are interested in signing Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United.
But the deal only will only make sense if Spurs believe they can secure long-term value from the transfer.
Newcastle are reportedly seeking a fixed fee of around £85 million, with add-ons potentially taking the total package to £100 million.
Despite that valuation, the report states Tottenham would effectively be paying £60 million for four years of service if they complete the move.
De Zerbi is pushing for the arrival of his fellow Italian. He views Tonali as a statement signing capable of transforming Tottenham’s midfield.
Newcastle are willing to consider offers this summer, although they expected any potential buyer to be competing in European competition next season.
Tottenham, however, are attempting to convince both the player and Newcastle that the project under De Zerbi is worth joining.
The situation also explains why Spurs allowed their option to buy Joao Palhinha to expire. For years, Tottenham have faced criticism for failing to compete financially with England’s biggest clubs.
Signing Tonali would send a different message and demonstrate a willingness to challenge for elite players.
However, Spurs will only proceed if they believe the investment can provide both immediate impact and long-term value.
