Marcus Rashford’s future has taken another major twist after Barcelona reportedly decided against signing the forward permanently this summer.
The England international spent last season on loan in Spain after leaving Manchester United temporarily following a difficult period at Old Trafford.
Rashford impressed during his spell in Catalonia and helped Barcelona win both La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup.
However, the Spanish giants will now send the forward back to Manchester United instead of completing a permanent transfer.
According to MARCA, Barcelona have decided not to trigger the £26M option included in Rashford’s loan agreement.
The Catalan club reportedly refused to match Manchester United’s asking price and instead attempted to lower the fee significantly.
Reports claim Barcelona only wanted to pay around £13M for the 28-year-old forward. Manchester United immediately rejected that proposal.
Barcelona instead completed a £70M move for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon. The Spanish outlet reported that Barcelona preferred Gordon because of his defensive work and younger age profile.
Rashford scored 14 goals and produced 14 assists in only 26 starts during his spell at Barcelona last season. Despite those numbers, his wages reportedly created another major issue during negotiations.
The Manchester United forward currently earns around £315,000 per week, which would have added huge long-term costs to any permanent agreement.
Shortly after reports emerged regarding Barcelona’s decision, Rashford removed references to the club from his social media accounts.
Rashford reportedly preferred staying at the Nou Camp. However, Manchester United can now negotiate with other interested clubs.
Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa all reportedly remain interested in signing the England international this summer. Meanwhile, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea could also enter the race.
Despite everything, Manchester United still appear determined to find a permanent solution for Rashford before the new season starts.
