Tottenham Hotspur are continuing their rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi after narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League last season.
The North London club finished 17th for the second consecutive campaign, forcing the hierarchy to back De Zerbi heavily in the transfer market.
Spurs have already focused on strengthening key areas of the squad and are now targeting reinforcements in midfield.
The Italian manager wants players capable of helping Tottenham move away from the struggles of recent years and compete higher up the table.
One of the names attracting significant attention is Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. Spurs remain interested in the Italy international, although competition for his signature is intensifying.
Manchester City are also monitoring the situation, making any potential deal increasingly complicated. However, Tottenham are not limiting their search to one target.
According to The Athletic, Spurs are considering a move for West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes and could challenge Manchester United for his signature.
The Red Devils have already held talks regarding fees and wages for Fernandes. Michael Carrick reportedly views the Portuguese midfielder as his number one target.
The Red Devils had also explored a move for Elliot Anderson. However, the midfielder’s valuation appears too high and reports suggest he prefers a move to Manchester City.
The 21-year-old is expected to attract strong interest this summer following West Ham’s relegation to the Championship.
The Hammers need to raise £150 million and Fernandes has emerged as one of their most valuable assets. West Ham have placed an £80 million valuation on the midfielder.
The club signed Fernandes from Southampton for £38 million last August and would make a substantial profit if they decide to sell.
Southampton would also receive 15 per cent of any future transfer fee through a sell-on clause. Fernandes remains under contract until 2030 and does not have a release clause.
