Manchester United plot blockbuster move for Spain World Cup winner

United have placed the World Cup winner high on their list of priority targets

Manchester United have endured a difficult opening to the 2026/27 Premier League campaign under Michael Carrick.

The Red Devils have collected five points from their first five matches, leaving them 12th in the early standings.

United invested £155 million rebuilding their midfield during the summer following several significant changes to Carrick’s squad.

Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba arrived as the club focused much of its spending on central midfield.

However, their recruitment plans could continue next summer, with another substantial investment now under consideration.

According to El Nacional, citing reports from The Mirror and The Telegraph, Manchester United are closely monitoring Athletic Club winger Nico Williams.

United have placed the 24-year-old high on their list of priority targets and could make a major move next summer.

Williams helped Spain win the 2026 World Cup after previously establishing himself as an important player for Athletic Club.

He remains tied to the Basque club after signing a long-term contract extension, which runs until June 2035.

Crucially, his current agreement contains a €95 million release clause that could determine the conditions of any potential transfer.

El Nacional reports that United would be prepared to invest that amount to bring Williams to Old Trafford.

Athletic would be unable to reject a €95 million offer if United formally trigger the clause, leaving the final decision with Williams.

The winger has previously attracted significant interest from Barcelona but ultimately remained at San Mames and extended his contract.

No club paid his €95 million clause during the most recent summer transfer window. Williams has continued with Athletic this season, featuring in all six of their opening La Liga fixtures.

United’s reported interest therefore remains focused on a potential move next summer rather than an immediate January transfer.
