Liverpool and Manchester United could compete for the same defensive target when the January transfer window opens.
Both clubs underwent significant changes during the summer, although their respective recruitment strategies focused on different areas of the squad.
Liverpool began a new era under Andoni Iraola following Arne Slot’s departure, while Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate also left Anfield.
The Reds responded by investing heavily in their squad, including the £106 million signing of Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain.
However, Liverpool have collected nine points from five Premier League matches, with their defensive performances attracting scrutiny during the transition.
Manchester United instead concentrated much of their summer spending on midfield reinforcements for Michael Carrick.
Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans arrived as United committed around £155 million to rebuilding that department.
However, the club did not recruit a natural left-back to provide additional competition for Luke Shaw.
That situation could now bring Liverpool and United into direct competition during the winter window.
According to Sportowy, Liverpool and Manchester United are interested in signing Crystal Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell in January. Chelsea are also monitoring the 27-year-old.
Mitchell has entered the final year of his Palace contract, while negotiations over a new long-term agreement have stalled.
The defender has established himself as an important figure at Selhurst Park after progressing through Palace’s academy into the first team.
Liverpool are seeking greater quality and depth on the left side following Robertson’s summer departure.
Meanwhile, United want another option capable of providing competition for Shaw, with Patrick Dorgu often operating further forward under Carrick.
Neither club has made a move yet, with interested teams continuing to assess Mitchell’s performances and contractual situation.
Palace reportedly value the England defender at around £20 million to £25 million ahead of the January window.
His contract situation could therefore become significant as Liverpool, United and Chelsea consider whether to formalise their interest during the winter.
