Cristian Romero appears increasingly likely to leave Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window.
The Argentina international endured a difficult domestic campaign despite carrying the captain’s armband.
Suspensions and a knee injury limited his influence during Tottenham‘s relegation battle. However, Romero rebuilt his reputation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The defender started all seven matches for Argentina and delivered several decisive moments.
He scored an extra-time winner against Cape Verde before finding the net during the comeback against Egypt. Romero also helped Argentina reach the World Cup final.
Spain eventually secured a 1-0 extra-time victory, while an injury forced Romero to leave the pitch.
Even so, his performances restored his standing following a turbulent season in North London. Now, Tottenham are preparing for his possible departure.
Romero has previously expressed an interest in playing in La Liga. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have both emerged as possible destinations during the current window.
However, Inter Milan recently moved into a strong position. The Italian champions entered talks with Tottenham and also met Romero’s representatives.
A proposed package worth up to €40M has formed part of the negotiations. Tottenham have already strengthened their defence ahead of his possible exit.
Jan Paul van Hecke arrived from Brighton, while Marcos Senesi joined on a free transfer. Roberto De Zerbi therefore has new options available if Romero leaves.
However, Inter’s pursuit could now suffer a major complication. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter‘s expected signing of John Stones could end their interest in Cristian Romero.
Stones left Manchester City after his contract expired and is reportedly close to signing a two-year deal with Inter.
That move would provide the Serie A club with another experienced central defender. Therefore, Inter may decide against spending heavily on Romero this summer.
That development would leave Tottenham searching for another buyer despite preparing for their captain’s departure.
Barcelona and Atletico Madrid could remain possible options, but no alternative deal has yet reached the same stage.
